Five Maui Must-Do's that are Fun and Free!

  • Maui has an endless amount to do (and see) these are five that are free!
  • Best things to do in Maui
  • Hike, snorkel, walk the beach.

Aloha adventure seeker! We're diving into the week with an inside scoop on Maui must-dos. We get it...traveling is expensive and all those excursions can be overwhelming. Not to worry hoaloha (friend in Hawaiian), we've rounded up Maui's top five must-do's that are fun and free! So pack your favorite suit (our faves linked here), reef-friendly sunscreen and a cup of Kona...you're in for a treat!

1) Sunrise hike along Thompson Road:

Buckle in for one of the most spectacular sunrises on the island. Stroll along the rolling hills on Thompson Road in upper Kula, just as the sun begins to peak over the top of Haleakala. You’ll be sure to see horses, cows, and lots of birds at the ranches, not to mention unbeatable, bi-coastal views of Maui, Lanai, Kaho’olawe, and Molokini. If you’ve budgeted a little extra for your morning, treat yourself to an organic coffee at Grandma’s Coffee House.

Inside scoop: Oprah owns property here! If you spot her, throw her a Shaka (hang loose sign).

2) Snorkel at La Perouse Bay:

This blue wonder lies at the southern tip of the island. If snorkeling isn’t your thing, this place makes a great spot for hiking through lava fields, trees and beautiful, sandy beaches. If you’re a natural water baby (suggested for advanced snorkelers), jump in to the right of the lagoon. There you’ll find some of the area's most beautiful fish varieties including: wrasse, tang, convict, lionfish and more!

Inside scoop: Head out early in the morning (7-9AM) to watch some spinner dolphins!

3) Sunset at Polipoli:

This budget-friendly experience will have you feeling like you paid for the whole package! Pack a picnic and drive up Polipoli road for some of the most epic views in Maui. Ten miles from Kula, this incredible state park boasts views in and above the clouds (yes please)! From the views of Haleakalā to the angelic cloud view, this is sure to be your best Maui sunset ever.

Inside scoop: Be sure to pack warm clothing and catch a ride in a 4-Wheel Drive vehicle.

4.) Wailea Beach Walk:

Maui is known as one of the United State’s most luxurious destinations (who doesn’t love a little luxury?!). Experience some of the luxury on a 3.2 mile (out and back) stroll of Wailea Beach. This coastal stroll will take you along one of Maui’s most pristine beaches and past some world-renowned resorts like the Grand Wailea, Four Seasons (our fave) and more!

Inside scoop: When in Wailea, not all sunsets are created equal! Snag a spot at Keawakapu Beach for an unforgettable sunset.

5.) Watch the Windsurfers:

Head over to Ho'okipa to catch some of the world's best windsurfers in the late afternoon. This windsurf mecca is home to professional windsurf competitions (almost daily). Pack a snack (and your camera) to watch the pros do their thing!

Inside scoop: If you get lucky, you might catch legendary big wave surfers like Kai Lenny or Paige Alms out surfing or foiling!

More Trip Tips:

  • When in Hawaii, always check the weather. Be prepared for and aware of your surroundings. The elements can change quickly here. Please pick up after yourself and others. Slow down friend, you're on island time now!
  • Ho'okipa tip: This is a true local treasure, be respectful. Check the weather before you go and be on the lookout for a North East (trade winds). By 1-2PM, there are several windsurfers in the water. Looking for the best view? Walk up past the lifeguard stand for a grassy hill with aerial advantage.
  • Thompson Road: this area has higher elevations and a slightly cooler temperature. Be sure to bring water and a light rain jacket just in case! The walk comes to a clear end; you'll see a gate and a steep road to your left, that's your cue to turn around. Local cars and wranglers in golf carts will pass, so politely step off to the side to let them through.
  • Polipoli: This is a windy road with a steep incline, so be sure you're in a reliable car. It will also be cooler up here at an even higher elevation than Thompson Road. Stay below the disc golf course. You'll likely see various cars parked and people sitting in their trucks or on blankets. Find a spot and stick by your vehicle! If you’re an expert adventurer this area boasts some great hiking too.
